About
Hi. I’m Thea Dunmire.
My passion is the use of management systems for improving the environmental and occupational safety and health performance of organizations.
I became interested in management system standards when I decided to leave legal practice with a large law firm to focus on helping companies put systems in place to prevent legal problems in the first place.
That same year, 1996, ISO published the ISO 14001 standard.
I took an EMS Lead Auditor Training Course in 1998, applied for RAB EMS auditor certification in 1999 and have focused on developing, implementing and auditing environmental and occupational safety and health management systems ever since.
As I got more involved in using international standards, I decided I wanted to get involved in actually developing the standards I was using. In 2002, I joined the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to TC 207 (the ISO Technical Committee that develops the ISO 14001 standards). In 2006, I started working with the OHSAS Working Group in revising the OHSAS 18001 standard. Since then I worked on the development or revision or ISO 14001, ISO 19011 and ISO 45001.
I have been an environmental and OH&S professional since I started my first project in 1978 while I was at the University of Iowa. I developed a system to keep track of laboratory chemicals from initial purchase to final disposal using punch cards. Needless to say, chemical tracking systems have changed a great deal since then.
In the 1980’s, I did EHS audits of Bristol Myers facilities around the world. Then, I went to law school and worked for U.S. EPA, Region 5 in Chicago. While at EPA, I was heavily involved in monitoring the clean-up at Superfund sites.
